KOLHAPUR: The district has already received 73% of its normal rainfall for the month of August. The district which generally gets 477.9mm rainfall in August has received 349.4mm in the first two weeks.
Areas which usually get less rainfall also got good rains this month. Shirol tehsil received 116.3mm (140.6%) rain so far this month compared to its average August figure of 82.7mm.
Gadhinglaj and Bhudargad tehsils, with an average rainfall of 175.9mm and 331.8mm, received 151.2mm and 324.6mm, respectively. Though known as a very low rainfall tehsil, Shirol has received excess rains in June, July and August.
Meanwhile, the western part of the district, which usually gets heavy rains, received low rainfall this month. Gaganbavda tehsil, known for the highest August rainfall in the district with average 1,568.5mm rain, received only 834mm (53.2%) so far this month.
Similarly, Radhanagari tehsil, which generally gets 1,029.9mm rain in August, received only 509.3mm so far. However, of the two major dams in the tehsil, Radhanagri is filled up to its capacity, while Kalammawadi is around 84% full. It means that even the distant areas of the district would not face water scarcity next year.
Radhanagari was declared scarcity-hit during 2014 and 2015 because it could get only 30% of its season's average rainfall.
The IMD officials said, this year the rainy season in the state got activated from the branch of south west monsoon that entered from Vidarbha first, instead of the general trend of crossing the Western Ghats first. Hence the district, except Kagal tehsil, received less than average rainfall in June. The monsoon got activated after June 19 in the region.
The district received only 46.8% of its June's average of 337.8mm. In July, against an average of 757.4mm, the district received 619mm (81.7%) rainfall.BOX
